Pop Culture VS Politics

Pop culture is an extremely large part of what young people see. In fact, these days it has a bigger impact on our lives than current events or breaking news. The young adults of our generation are too busy scrolling down E! News and checking their latest Twitter updates to know what is actually going on in the world. Don’t believe me!? Check my latest video out! I asked some basic pop and political questions to my a few college students and this is what I got!

Perez Hilton and Ariana Grande at War!?

Why is Perez Hilton always causing trouble?!  For those of you who don’t know, Perez Hilton is probably the Internet’s biggest and most well known gossip king. And his latest attack has been on America’s current sweetheart, Ariana Grande. Let’s take a few steps back, shall we?

It seems the animosity between these two began around the Grammys when Perez felt the need to bash Ariana’s stylistic choices.

He tweeted: “Ugh. The Ariana ponytail is back. Bring me a bucket I’m gonna start crying!” followed by, “I was distracted by the hair, but Ariana’s dress is even worse than the hair! Poor child needs a whole new glam team ASAP!”

While this was slightly unnecessary, it was a matter of opinion and could have easily been dealt with. But, unfortunately for Ariana, he was not done here. Perez then went on to criticize her music as well, sending her a direct tweet, “@ArianaGrande And hopefully when you release your next album you’ll stop copying @MariahCarey so hard. :-)”

At this point, he was just bullying her with no real motive. With that being said, Grande dealt with the situation in a very mature manner. She sent out an indirect message as a general response to the ridiculousness that was coming her way.

Ariana’s Tweet: “i’ll change up my style when i’m ready to, enjoyin the last of my retro phase. more important things like this musicccc, stu for the night”

This story seems to be the backbone of the current drama in the media, simply because Perez was clearly not done with little Ariana. Last week, he went in for another attack. This time, he decided to make false accusations regarding Grande and cocaine.  But it has become apparent that Perez doesn’t like the burn he is getting in return for his poor choices a.k.a. threatening tweets from Ariana fans and a possible lawsuit from the pop princess herself.

For whatever reason, Hilton likes to use Twitter as a way to relay his negativity, false comments, and allegations. He tweeted last Sunday, “Are you okay? I heard someone saw you doing cocaine at a party this weekend. Stay away from drugs Ariana!!!” and then continued, “I’m praying for you!” he wrote. “You can overcome this!!”

He then went on to tweet her family members and team that he was “concerned” and “hopes” that she will get all the help she needs. Once her fans got involved and began to threaten him and his newly adopted child, matters only got worse, going no where but downhill. When it became clear that Ariana was not going to get involved, at least via Twitter, Perez was only angered even more. He basically said that his chain of deceit and stupidity would continue until Grande stepped in and addressed the problems. Here is where a double standard becomes evident. (No one likes double standards, Perez!) Clearly, Mr. Hilton can’t handle a taste of his own medicine. He then began to put himself on the level of teenage girls…the most dramatic beings on the planet. This was yet another poor choice made by the celebrity blogger. Apparently, he thought he would be able to put an end to the war he declared. Unfortunately, that it not how things work when you are dealing with dedicated fans, of any celebrity for that matter.

A source close to Ms. Grande says that none of these claims are true. Word is being passed around that Grande and her team have hired lawyers to handle the situation. Seems like Hilton may now have more problems than just one.

With all of this being said, Perez seems to think that the biggest issue is that he tweeted his opinion about her outfit. It is obviously clear that there are bigger problems here. Making a false statement about someone, also known as slander, as serious as drug use is the problem. In this case, he is putting a reputation on the line, which may not seem important, but for a young woman who is trying to launch her career, this could be quite pertinent.
